Alex The Kid
Stylistically Alex the Kid explore themes relating to representations of the future within popular culture and society's relationship with technology. Live shows have utilised 3D, video DJs and interactive props such as laser guns and time machines.
The four members -- Dave Thomson (vocals and vocoder), Ben Thomson (guitar and synthesizer), Renaissance (drums and percussion) and Benjamin Hughes (bass guitar and bass synthesizer) -- have been performing for several years, including three appearances at "pulp-culture" expo Armageddon. In 2008 they released an EP titled Welcome to the Future, which received financial backing from Smokefree and positive reviews.
"Alex the Kid are from the future," says Dave Thomson, tongue in cheek. "We have quantum leaped to this time to promote human and robot unity on earth."
"Simply brilliant. From the midst of a musical globescape littered with the decaying carcasses of amateurish electro/punk bands surfaces Alex The Kid, a Wellington based electronic/live fusion band who have successfully pulled off the clever trick of emerging fully formed in both concept, presentation and musical content. Maintaining a comfortable and credible musical dialogue that navigates back and forth between indie rock/punk and electronic dance is no easy feat in the swimming pool, but on songs like "Technology" Alex The Kid convincingly beat the competition by half a minute in the 500 meters. Aside from the music they seem to think they're from Quantum leap, and are determined to promote unity between robots and humans on earth.
Even TV3's David Farrier has given them a mention or two."
