Brand New Math

Brand New Math are an Auckland alt-pop 4 piece bubbling with the energy and excitement of an attention seeking 4-year-old armed with a pot and a wooden spoon, a sound sometimes described as “The Magnetic Fields with balls”.

Utilising the combined forces of Brad Fafejta, Tim Neale, Calum Gunn and Tim Roest, Brand New Math’s live shows have been called ‘a revelation… a battle of Man versus PA” (Real Groove, Oct ’08). They attack their songs with wide-eyed wonder, and little respect for genre, crafting pop that is immediately catchy and will have you humming for days afterwards.

Out of the ashes of previous bands they recorded their first release ‘Weapon Of Parnell’ – a tale of rohypnol and TV presenters – as a demo in late 2007 and ended up no. 1 for a month on Auckland alternative radio station 95bfm. They followed this up in July 2008 with The Moustache Party EP, a 4 song CD that “delivers on the instant gratification front with four solid, gloriously messed up pop songs” (Andrew Tidball, Cheese on Toast) jumping from bubbly indie to ragged space pop interspersed with the whimpers, crooning and howls of lead singer Bradley. The 2nd EP’s first single ‘Idiot Savant’ was a hit on alternative radio stations throughout New Zealand, staying within the Radioscope Alternative Top 40 for 8 weeks. BNM have also kept themselves very busy playing live at every opportunity they get, from bars and pubs and house-parties to the formal surrounds of New Zealand Fashion Week and the campfire singalongs of Camp A Low Hum ‘08. In October ’08 they completed a national tour and opened for international act Yeasayer, as well as high-profile New Zealand exports So So Modern and The Ruby Suns before joining Cut Off Your Hands in Australia to support their album release tour. This was followed by an appearance at Big Day Out ’09 and a second visit to Sydney to play their own headlining shows.

Since this early success they have been slowly but resolutely piecing together recordings for their debut LP, beginning in August 2009 with tracking at legendary Revolver Studios before taking their recording equipment wherever fancied them to add the last layers, including Ryan McPhun’s room of musical curios. ‘Alligators’ is the first song released from these efforts and will soon be followed by a digital EP before the debut LP is finally sent out into the world.

I didn't want to like this band as apparently, the singer shouted abuse at me when he was drunk when I went to the toilet. But I didn't hear what he said and as it turned out, Brand New Math were excellent. They reminded me of The Unicorns, but with Ian Svenonious singing.” – artrocker.com

What sort of album influences Brand New Math?

Dr Dre - 2001 (aka The Chronic 2001)
We all like diverse music, but there are very few albums or artists we agree upon universally. Dr Dre and his album '2001' is one of the few points of intersection. It's an album with many different styles all brought together in a smooth yet grimy way that appeals to a lot of modern music listeners, even a lot of metal fans we know. Production-wise, artistically, it's a perfect idea. Also, it doesn't have just one personality... there's Snoop providing laconic insights into ghetto life, Nate Dogg supplying smooth chorus hooks, and occasionally Eddie Griffin telling us about 'thirsty bitches'.
