			<title>Crazy P i-d mix and interview</title>

&lt;p&gt;Finger clicking good, the shoulder shimmying, rhythm funk, &lt;strong&gt;Crazy P&lt;/strong&gt; comrades Chris Todd, Jim Baron, Dannielle Moore, Tim Davies and Matt Klose have earnt themselves a loyal following. Packing out venues all over the world for the past five years, the formerly titled ‘Crazy Penis’, first  met when they were students at Nottingham University. Discovered and signed to Mancunian imprint Paper Recordings, the electro pop outfit then spent most of their time getting messy at heady, all night raves and local parties. Experimental, outlandish and up for anything, their reputation for bringing the fun to a good night out proceeds them and today the five friends make a living playing their experimental, funky house productions at uber clubs and festivals.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Individually pursuing side projects off the back of Crazy P, the five plan to spread their wings further afield in 2012. i-D online caught up with the crew to find out what their future holds.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;I-D: Tell me about your earlier days when you were Crazy Penis, were you all more free spirited, care free individuals back then?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Crazy P: We were certainly younger which comes with a certain amount of abandonment but we were never into throwing TVs out of windows or anything! If we did it was from a ground floor hotel room and we went straight outside and brought it back in! The music has probably evolved more than changed, we’re more confident with sounds and more open to experimentation. The Penis used samples, we tend to steer clear of that now!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What fresh Nottingham talents are you excited about right now?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Red Rackem, but he’s in Berlin now, Clyde officially from Derby, but hey!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Where’s good to have a good night out in Nottingham?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Moog for a dance and if Boogaloo is still open that’s a good night. Other than that a good curry house and the Gladstone pub, a local face!&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What are your creative processes when writing new material?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;They vary, mainly Jim and Chris are forthcoming with ideas. It’s the three of us that were responsible for the last album previous to which we worked as the live band thrashing out jamming sessions. This time we went back to basics and worked from a production point of view. It was an experiment that worked. I got familiar with a vocal loop machine which was new to me whilst the lads got stuck into their various instruments and wizardry. Partnered with a few bottles of vino we had some very enjoyable nights in the Crazy P towers.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;How do you want audiences to feel when they listen to your music?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Connected, interested, warm, sexy, vibrant, melancholic, energised, reflective, spirited, tall, ready for moving forward, a bit cheesy I know but every emotion!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Which artists, bands or DJ’s have had a significant impact upon your sound?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;We all grew up with good disco. War, Stevie Wonder, Chic, Kid Creole and of course all the New York inspired disco movements through to Prince, The Cure and all the quality 80s pop that is timeless. Kate Bush, Moloko, Jamie Lidel, LCD, it’s an endless list!&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;What’s the best gig you’ve played to date?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Apart from the recent Bristol Motion gig, our Leeds show was simply the best – and The Garden Festival. It’s a tough question to answer but we are lucky to have had some quality gigs all over the place. The first memorable one was Good Vibrations Australia 2004, Nitin Sawney and Moloko on the bill, Moloko smashed it!!!&lt;/p&gt;

I just thought of it one day and said to myself ‘that would be a goodbandname.’ After a while when you listen to the music, you don’t really think about the name or what the word is.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MH: 2011 has been massive for you guys – playing Glastonbury, T In The Park, a lot of the big festivals. What have some of the highlights been for you?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;DB: It was great to play Cream Riveria festival. It's been a great year. We toured with Tame Impala which was amazing and Unknown Mortal Orchestra which is two bands from your part of the world, or your area (laughs). Even last night we started this tour with these two bands, whom we were really looking forward to touring with. It's just really exciting. It's the last tour and you play most days of the year, yeah it's just really exciting.to be playing with these two bands. One of them is Fanzine from London. The other is Gross Magic. Obviously there have been other highlights as we've been touring all year so mostly they have been playing shows.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MH: The Laneway lineup is a stellar one that you'll be a part of – any aquantainces on the bill or anyone in particular you're keen on seeing?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;DB: I remember looking at the bill and thinking this is going to be really great. But I can't think of the bill right now.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MH: In the aftermath of your album, a lot of the talk within the media was an element of nostalgia or revivalism, harking back a lot of the guitar music of the 90s, noise rock, shoegaze, etc. Was this something you guys were conscious of? Were these fair comparisons from the media?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;DB: Yeah. I guess when we were recording it, some of the bands that were mentioned and that people compare us to we were only listening to some of them. A lot of the bands or artists from the 90s like Smog, well I guess Smog isn't mentioned. Some of it is journalists just reading articles about us and then saying the same thing and other times they were bands I really liked and I think that's quite nice. I remember initially it was nice that we weren't compared to bands that we didn't like (laughs). I know that's what comes with releasing an album. It's the easiest way to describe music is by saying “oh it sounds a bit like this and it sounds a bit like that” I read a few things. Because we're a new band, I haven't really gone out of my way to pay too much attention to what everybody has been saying.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;MH: Do you guys come from a pop point of view or is it a bit more organic? Just refering to the contrast of the dissonant guitars and the poppy melodies in your music. Is pop music important for Yuck?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br/&gt;DB: We weren't really coming at it from any point of view. I think melody is something, well it's quite melodic music generally. We were just writing songs and not really thinking about the direction to go in. I think what comes across to me when I think about the record or in the live set. I think live it's a bit more linear. But I don't think we were completley focussed on one specific sound . I think it's just a mess of different things. A lot of debut albums do spiral off in diffeent directions. Yeah, we weren't really focussed so maybe melodies eventuated naturally.&lt;/p&gt;

			<description>&lt;p&gt;He's hit the Warehouse Project, 1Xtra Live and Fabric in the UK, and they've gone behind the scenes of latest video &lt;strong&gt;'Who Knows?' &lt;/strong&gt;(which you can watch at the bottom of the post) and now &lt;strong&gt;Youngman&lt;/strong&gt; hooks up with super producer &lt;strong&gt;Benga&lt;/strong&gt; to create some havoc on tour in the States in the latest episode of web series, '&lt;strong&gt;The Night Is Young'&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Flying from Paris to Atlanta, via Florida and Kansas, Youngman aka Simon Smith brings some UK dubstep flavours to the US with one-third of Magnetic Man, Benga. This gives us just a taste of what life on tour is set to be like for Youngman as he embarks on the UK MOBO tour in February, his own Youngman live dates, as well as supporting Example on his UK arena tour in April.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

			<title>Gig Review: Laneway Festival 2012</title>

			<description>&lt;p&gt;Sporting one of the best lineups in recent memory, Auckland's Laneway Festival was one to watch in 2012, and it didn't disappoint. Perfect weather, great sound and what was basically a dream lineup of 2011's most important new bands. There were a few niggly beer and food related issues (long queues, selling out of stuff etc) but even this couldn't dampen the spirit of the chilled out crowd on what was a great day of music in the sun.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;First music I caught was the end of &lt;strong&gt;OPPOSSUM&lt;/strong&gt;'s set, the new project from ex-Mint Chick Kody Nielson and folkster Bic Runga. Some really good tunes here - think a poppier, less frantic &lt;em&gt;Screens&lt;/em&gt;-era Mint Chicks. Kody's link with his former band's sound is closer here than in his brother's Unknown Mortal Orchestra (perhaps because of Kody's distinct voice), but that is certainly not a bad thing. We will be hearing a lot more from these guys in the future, you can count on it.&lt;/p&gt;

These guys were just great - energetic, intense and with some great stage gymnastics (including the always-classic guitar solo while lying on the ground manouver). If there is any justice in the world, they will be much further up the bill next year. Another band with some great free/ pay what you want downloads &lt;a href=&quot;http://transistors.bandcamp.com/&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;online&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;The first international I watched was New Yorkers &lt;strong&gt;Cults&lt;/strong&gt;. I'm a big fan of their self titled debut, and while I enjoyed their set, I did find it an extremely laid back affair. Not a huge surprise really, given the content of the album, but I guess I was still pumped from the Transistors' set. Still a good all round performance though, and their singles &quot;Abducted&quot; and &quot;Go Outside&quot; sounded as great as they do on record. Some nice drum effects going on here: heavy on the reverb and a nice simulation of the many &quot;handclap&quot; parts that appear on &lt;em&gt;Cults&lt;/em&gt;. A shoutout must also go to the sound all day here - as someone who grew up listening to muddy sound at Big Day Outs it was a real treat to exerience crisp, well mixed sound on all stages throughout the entire festival. Onstage however, they were brilliant, with their summery harmonies and distorted guitar pop bringing to mind 90s survivors Teenage Fanclub - high praise indeed. A really fun and energetic set, hugely enjoyable. And yes, when they played &quot;Die&quot; it rocked like a mother.&lt;/p&gt;

I loved both of their albums, and live they certainly lived up to my expectations, displaying a grittier and more guitar-driven sound than the more keyboard-heavy recent album &lt;em&gt;Belong&lt;/em&gt;. Shoegaze with a heavy 80s pop feel - there's something about new indie bands adopting 80s pop sounds that just &lt;em&gt;works&lt;/em&gt; - and another great set. Highlights included &quot;Belong&quot; and &quot;Heart in Your Heartbreak&quot; before I had to leave due to the only scheduling conflict of the day - oh well, you can't please every punter of the day I suppose.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;But &lt;strong&gt;Yuck&lt;/strong&gt; were worth it. Another band I'm a huge fan of, their eponymous debut combined 90s style distortion-heavy guitars with modern indie rock to form what was one of 2011's best debut albums. Live, the album's guitar sound was captured perfectly with soaring harmonics, feedback in just the right places, and all those wonderful things that made bands like The Breeders and Dinosaur Jr so special. Stage presence-wise the band were shoegazers in the most literal sense: they kept crowd interaction to an absolute minimum. Fortunately the quality of their musical performance more than made up for this. Highlight for me was closer &quot;Rubber&quot; which served the same purpose it does on the album: taking the band out in waves of beautiful swirling feedback.&lt;/p&gt;

The laid-back crowd lapped it up - as did I - with closer &quot;Soft&quot; and the accompanying mass singalong/dancealong proving the set highlight.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;After Washed Out I took a bit of a break before catching the start of &lt;strong&gt;SBTRKT&lt;/strong&gt;'s set. Cool funked out rhythms and soulful vocals, and I loved that they wore their trademark masks. Wish I could've stuck around, but I wanted to catch the start of &lt;strong&gt;The Horrors&lt;/strong&gt;. And it's a good thing I did, since they opened with &quot;Endless Blue&quot;, arguably the best track on last year's &lt;em&gt;Skying&lt;/em&gt;. I was unsure what to expect from The Horrors live - many of the live videos of them on YouTube verge on the disinterested - but they were great: intense as hell, and rocking their way through a greatest hits set that included &quot;I Can See Through You&quot;, &quot;Sea Within A Sea&quot; and &quot;Moving Further Away&quot;. One of many live highlights of the day.&lt;/p&gt;

By this time nightfall had descended, which was a good thing as the lightshow worked pefectly with M83's uplifting electro-pop. Was great to see a live band on stage, especially the drum kit, as the drumming on &lt;em&gt;Hurry Up, We're Dreaming&lt;/em&gt; is a definite highlight. A mindblowingly good set of shoegazy (there's that word again) beats and great tunes, this was the perfect end to an amazing day. Their set could only have been improved by the presence of a real saxophone player during &quot;Midnight City&quot;. It's a tribute to what a genius Anthony Gonzalez is that he can actually get you excited about this most 80s of horn instruments. The dude could play a keytar while wearing MC Hammer pants and it would suddenly be the most cutting edge thing ever.&lt;br/&gt;&lt;br/&gt;Before I headed off, I managed to catch a tiny bit of &lt;strong&gt;Shayne Carter&lt;/strong&gt;'s set over at the Park Lane stage. Amazing stuff, a beautiful wall of sound created via effortless noise guitar on the part of Carter. Might have to dust off those old Dimmer records and give them a re-listen. Top stuff and a fantastic day out.&lt;/p&gt;
