Rifles
Rifles are a four piece Rock band from Wellington. Rifles play loud.
‘Nietzsche Is Dead’ is the first of several songs recently recorded with Wellington engineer Tim Shann (Strangers, So So Modern, Body Lyre, Gaywyre) and will eventually be released through Mole Music Ltd.
Reviews of their last EP Sketches from Under The Radar:
"It’s the mutha fucken Rifles and instantly I’m won over.
Fans of big bass/scream/angles (think Jesus Lizard, even some early June Of 44, Fugazi), will need to get this, as it’ll make you relook at all your early 90's mathness.
Not to take away from the amazing musicship, it’s really the vocals that will lift this group up as it instantly sounds large and worldwide.
Make this your next buy and see these guys live too – you won’t regret it."
What sort of album influences Rifles?
Pulp - This Is Hardcore
I first heard this album in sixth form when my friend Sam (Sharpie Crows) lent it to me on a whim. The first thing that struck me was the artwork, it was dark, disillusioned and distant. This was in turn matched by the silk veneer gloss of the booklet; smooth, sexy with a fair amount of Pulp –induced sleaze. The music inside was an extension of this, brooding, black and bleakly honest.
Apparently this was the most emotionally taxing album Pulp ever made and you can definitely hear and feel it. The strain apparent in the opening melancholy anthem ‘The Fear’; in the karaoke primal liberation of ‘This is Hardcore’; in the washed out, vague advice of ‘A Little Soul’ and in the pathetic stay-at-home mutterings of Jarvis on ‘Dishes’ – “I am not Jesus, though I have the same initials, I am the man who stays home and does the dishes.”
This album is awkwardly frank but it seems quietly content in this. This is why this album has been an influence to me, it boxes up disillusion and disdain in a beautiful black velvety package, ties it with a pink bow and sells it back to your sorry tired old ass.
