Didn't the entire rest of his band walk out before they recorded that one? Always a bad omen.

MGMT's latest one was a pretty big let down too IMO.

Second Coming - Stone Roses, not a BAD alum per se but fucked if it didn't take them forever and end up sounding a bit shoe-gaze-lite. shared

Yes Please! - The Happy Mondays - the album that bankrupted Factory records, was intially recorded without vocals and most of the recording budget went up in several puffs of freebase smoke.

While you're at it, Black Grape - Stupid, Stupid, Stupid which, aside from Get Higher, which featured on lots of film soundtracks, the album was purchased by only myself and Shaun Ryders mum.

Yeah totally RE Second Coming - the classic case of a band spending way too much time working on a follow up and releasing an incoherent, over produced mess as a result. Chinese Democracy is the ultimate example of course. shared

    Best;

The Black Parade - My Chemical Romance, saw the band transcend the emo tip and produce s concept album of exhilrating originality.

    'Tusk - Fleetwood Mac.

How do you follow up the biggest rock record of all time? How about an experimental album, which due to romantic, creative and chemical differences you will record seperately, while including every member of the band's pet projects.

Not sure if it counts, as it was a soundtrack, but Tenacious D's The Pick Of Destiny CD was no where near as good as their first, which now that I think about it was sort of a soundtrack to their HBO series.

    The killers' Sam's Town

System Of A Down- Toxicity, some may argue it was good, but rubbish next to their self titled 1st one. Others may argue they were both/all shit! Lol

BESTS: Kasabian's 'Empire' QOTSA's Song For The Deaf (was that their 2nd album??)

@internetbt Oh yeah I forgot about that second Tenacious D album. That was pretty awful, so was the movie.

I think Songs For The Deaf was QOTSA's third album, the follow up to Rated R. It doesn't need to be the scond album though, just the follow up to a successful or really good album, which it was.

@Dan That second Snoop Dogg album was so awful. He never really released another consistently good album after Doggystyle either. That Xzibit one was truly atrocious as well.

For me RHCP "One Hot Minute" was blerg compared to "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" - maybe because of the drugs Kiedis was back on. shared

@MikeP Ironcally, the silliest thing about Xibit's awesome 'Restless' was Snoop Dogg's nonsensical babbling at the end of 'X'...though he is potentially the only rapper to mention an Xolotel. shared

    'Sandanista' - The Clash

How do you follow-up one of the most critically acclaimed rock albums of all time? With a flabby four side paen to the Central American communist insurgents whose main tribute was that if you play the album end to end it lasts as long, to the second, as the Nicuagruan civil war.

Can i get away with saying Bloc Party's Weekend In The City was terrible, if I tell you i really really love Silent Alarms and Intimacy..?? shared

  •
    682

    AceMcWicked 1 year ago
@internetbt I don't agree with you, but I can understand the position; they are all very different albums. Silent Alarm is really eclectic, sort of spikey post-punk sounding, Intimacy is a dance record, pure and simple, and Weekend in the City is a pop music concept album. They all differ hugely musically so I can see if you didn't like the direction of any opne of those albums you could argue the band deteriorated from record to record. shared

@MikeP Hahaha...no shit? It is funny though, because it is an album that has some good songs on it, and it is far from the worst CLASH album, it is just bogged down by lots and lots of dross. shared

@internetbt Yeah man we can put Weekend In The City in there. Although I actually quite like it (it's definitely their weakest album though).

@Dan actually "Flux" was one of their between album singles, so will appear in the "Best Non-Album Singles" poll we're gonna do at some point (suggested by Mike Snow Hansen). Bloc Party released a single between each album and every single one of them is awesome: "Two More Years" after Silent Alarm, "Flux" after Weekend In The City, and "One More Chance" after Intimacy.

is this a weezer free zone, or can we toss in Make Believe? I know some draw the line earlier, but when I heard the "preview release" of Beverly Hills I felt like someone had punched me in the stomach shared

problem is what exactly was "Make Believe' following up? Not the Green album (which was a hit), but Maladroit, which was only average. You could say that's where their slide downwards started.... shared

  •

    MikeP 1 year ago
Yeah that's a good point, but I think we can include Make believe as it was the first time they were ever truly awful rather than average. Lets just say it was the follow up to their entire career so far, which until then had been pretty decent.

I felt the same way when I first heard "Beverly Hills" - definitely their worst lead single to date. At least the Red Album and Raditude had good lead singles, and current sngle "Memories" is a good 'un too.

yeah maladroit isn't my favorite by any stretch, but it didn't hit me with the 'crash and burn' feeling Make Believe gave me and I could listen to it from start to finish without an overwhelming urge to skip a track, or even delete it from my library forever.

I was really looking forward to it for some reason and that made me feel even more disappointed.

I've liked a lot of their stuff since, but so far nothing has had the start to finish solidness of the earlier stuff. fingers always crossed though...

God the list makes depressing reading doesn't it?

I once met this guy who had a record collection more or less along these lines. It was awful, you'd pull out a record and be like "oh cool, you like [x]. Oh THAT'S their only album you have?" Every record. Just awful. But he moved to Australia and he's dead now so it's ok.

Also I think I may be the only person who likes Sandanista. And Dan it's SIX sides, not four So it's even better!
